Books

Hello, I'm Sarah and I love reading so it only seemed appropriate for me to blog about books :)

The Host.jpgThe Host,

Okay, I'll confess I'm in love with this book! :)

Unlike the most popular alien invasions books or movies, The Host doesn't
have a Will Smith or anybody else to save the planet against a background of gun fire and secret weapons. In The Host humanity is lost, vastly outnumbered and and overwhelmed by superior technology. There are tiny pockets of resistance left, there's just a handful of humans who haven't been captured, but they don't spend their days plotting to retake Earth back- just surviving is hard enough.
Indeed, The Host isn't about saving the planet from the alien invaders; it's a story about what it's like to be human, about identity and being individual. Most of all it's a story about the brutal nature of love. Wanderer (the Soul) not only feels love for Melanie's family but also for her love Jared, which causes her to make the toughest decision she could possible make. A choice between her own people and Melanie's love.
Without giving anything away for those of you who haven't read it yet (Why not?) the story focuses on morals and what's right and wrong. Not only does Wanderer have to make a decision on turning her back on her own people or following her heart, but she has to decide what's right for her and Melanie at the same time. Even though initially it's very easy to dislike The Souls they do start to grow on you especially Wanderer as she is very special and acts as if she were human as she shares the same love a human would.
All in all The Host makes for a compelling read. Avoiding the obvious sci-fi cliches it concentrates on humanity and human emotions experienced by an alien invader who ultimately wants to be human.
It's a great read and I would encourage anyone to read it!

Love
Sarah
